Psalm 91:5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day
Terrorism was never mentioned in the news when I was growing up but today there is not a day that goes by without something in the news about it. I have to say they have named it correctly; the whole purpose of the enemy’s lies is to cause the people of this earth to live with terror in dread of a disaster. He wants to sow fear in our hearts, our speech and our actions. Fear is the enemy of our faith.
Psalm118:6 tells us, “The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?” Of all the scriptures in the bible, I am sure I have said this one more than any other. Psalm 91:5 declares,”You shall not be afraid of terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day.”
The Lord does not say, “try not to be afraid and when that does not work, try harder,” He says, “you will not be afraid.” When the Lord says, “You will not be afraid”, by the grace of God, I respond by saying, “I will not be afraid!” Fear is not something to be taken lightly. Some people think they are not in fear because they don’t feel afraid at the moment but yet their speech and their actions are full of fear.
Do you buckle your seat belt because you are afraid you will fly through the windshield, or do buckle your seat belt because it is a safety feature of the car and it’s the law? Fear can be very subtle.
The things of the spirit realm cannot enter the physical earth realm without the cooperation of man and the spoken word. If it were not so, the devil would appear and kill all the Jews and Christians right now; but he does not have the authority, he must work through man.
Likewise the blessing of the Lord must be brought into this realm through faith. If it were not so, God would force His will onto all mankind and we would all be healed, delivered, and instantly set free. God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten son that whosoever believes on Him should not perish. It is God’s will that none perish but not everyone cooperates with His will.
Think about, “What would you do if you had no fear?”
2 Tim1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
It’s like a light bulb turning on inside, realizing, fear has to bow to the name of Jesus, that I don’t have to accept dread or terror of even the littlest thing. I am grateful that the Holy Spirit is causing me to see how to become free from fear by meditating on His word, like Psalm 91,, and speaking His word, and seeing His word work
I have thought about the part of 2 Tim 1:7, “God has given us a sound mind” and how that relates to God not giving us a spirit of fear. Fear can make us do things that don’t even make sense. It can control what we do, if we let it. It can make us imagine all sorts of horrible things that might happen that in all probability won’t happen. Sitting up at night worrying about our children does nothing to keep them safe, but having confidence that God is watching over them keeping them safe will.
Some people may even think fear is a good thing but it is not! Years ago I heard a man tell how he was assigned to give a lecture on safety for the company he worked for. In the past he had heard the safety lectures tell how you needed to be afraid of these dangers (I think it was concerning electricity) so you wouldn’t make mistakes. He prayed about it and the Lord told him to instruct the people to use wisdom instead of being afraid. I would much rather have the wisdom of God than to be afraid.
I’ve experienced before what Priscilla mentioned, not feeling afraid, but my words were filled with fear. I didn’t even realize I how afraid I was until someone pointed it out to me. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. I’m grateful for this study helping me renew my mind and getting rid of any fear in my life. Thank you Jesus!
Thank you for your thoughtful replies, Rose and Dawn, I agree, I can look back on my life and see when I acted in fear, I actually did the opposite of what was beneficial to me. Fear is not wisdom. Praise God for a sound mind.
Hebrews 11:1 tells us “Now faith is the substance (realization) of things hoped for, the evidence (confidence) of things not seen.”
We could say that fear is the expectation of things not wanted, the confidence that those things not seen will come to pass.
Faith and fear are very similar, but work in opposite directions. What is your heart set on? Fear causes us to doubt the promises of God are true. If we try to stand in faith and have fear at the same time that is being double-minded. Some people think a little fear is good but James 1: 6-8 tells us, “6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”
Fear is a liar. Let us renew our minds to the Word of God and drive out all fear so we can stand firm on God’s promises with no doubt. THE LORD IS ON MY SIDE, I WILL NOT FEAR! AMEN!
The Lord is on my side I will not fear is one of my all time favorite scriptures. I have probably said it more than any other.
